The deep south of New Zealand’s South Island isn’t as cold as you might expect. During the summer months you can surf without a hood or booties in just a 3mm steamer. Typically a storm will pass under the country bringing cold winds and this pushes swells up and around the eastern side which result in offshore winds every day. There are many uncrowded beach breaks to surf and a 4×4 is necessary to access many of them. Knowledge of a local South Island surf guide is necessary as well as many of the spots are over farm land so you need to know where you’re going and who to ask.
